Internet / World Wide Web / Bluetooth / Wi-Fi

The Internet is a global computer network that transmits data and media across interconnected devices. The Internet works by using a packet routing network that follows Internet Protocol and Transport Control Protocol. The inventors of the Internet are computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn. The Internet began in the 1960s, and it was a way for government researchers to share information. However, today, the Internet is used by ordinary people as a means to find and share information.

The World Wide Web is an interconnected system of public web pages that are accessible through the Internet. In 1989, British scientist Tim Berners-Leeinvented the World Wide Web while working at CERN.The Web was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automated information-sharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world. Now people are able to share their work and thoughts through social networking sites, blogs, video sharing, and more.

The World Wide Web and the Internet are two different things. The Web is one of many applications built on top of the Internet, they are the pages you see when you are at a device and you're online. But the internet is the network of connected computers that the web works on, and what emails and files travel across. We connect to this Internet to access the Web, but the Internet is just the connection between countless, separate servers, computers, and devices.

The first web page ever went live on August 6, 1991. It was dedicated to information on the World Wide Web project. This webpage was created by Tim Berners-Lee. It ran on a NeXT computer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which was called CERN. The address for the first ever web page address was: http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.

Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor. She was the woman who pioneered the technology that would one day form the basis for today's WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth communication systems. Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck made a song called This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr. The song is about Lamarr being a genius, but no one appreciating how smart she is because she is a beautiful young woman. People only saw her as a Hollywood actress. Her beauty became a barrier that stopped the rest of the world from taking her seriously.

Jaap Haartsen is the man who developed bluetooth. In 1994, he laid the foundations for the system that was later known as the Bluetooth Wireless Technology. This enabled connections between a seemingly endless array of devices. Jim Kardach is the man who named bluetooth tooth. The logo is actually the initials of Harald Bluetooth in Old Norse runic symbols. The merging of these two runic letters also has a double meaning.

Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil invented a system which allowed radio waves to jump onto different frequencies. The idea was originally to stop the US Navy's radio signals being jammed by their enemy in World War 2. Then, in 1991, NCR Corporation with AT&T Corporation invented the precursor to 802.11, intended for use in cashier systems. The first wireless products were under the name WaveLAN. The name later changed to wifi for wireless fidelity, and it is now used by ordinary people all over the world to use the internet on the go.
